This course is for NetBackup administrators, operators,system engineers, and technical support personnel whowish to broaden their NetBackup advancedtroubleshooting knowledge and skills on a Windows platform.

Prerequisites

To succeed fully in this course, students should have:

  • One year NetBackup Windows administration
  • Two years experience as a Windows system administrator (including networking)
  • Familiarity with backup and restore concepts and SAN concepts

Skills Gained

  • Detect problems using tools such as the Activity Monitor, reports, NetBackup Configuration, Validation Utility (NCVU), and notify scripts
  • Find problems using tools such as backup and restore logs and the log parser
  • Focus on problem resolution using tools such as NetBackup commands and system commands and files
  • Troubleshoot new server and client installations, media, system, network, device, and other misc problems
  • Correct and verify problem correction

Course Content

Module 1 - Defining the Problem

  • Use the Administration Console, including the reports, to detect errors
  • Use notify scripts and the VERITAS SNMP Extension to receive e-mail for errors and specific events

Module 2 - Process Review and Debug Logs

  • Identify the daemons and processes involved in a backup operation
  • Identify the daemons and processes involved in a restore operation
  • Enable and manage debug logs

Module 3 - NetBackup Utilities

  • Use the log parser for a backup failure and a restore failure
  • Locate and install the NetBackup Configuration Validation Utility (NCVU_WIN)
  • Run NCVU_WIN on the master server, media servers, and clients

Module 4 - Media Troubleshooting

  • Describe how media becomes frozen or suspended
  • Troubleshoot common media errors

Module 5 - System Considerations

  • Identify critical system resources
  • Troubleshoot shared memory problems
  • Monitor resource usage with Task Manager
  • Monitor resource usage with Performance Monitor

Module 6 - Network Considerations

  • Detect and correct physical network errors
  • Troubleshoot NetBackup and network configuration errors
  • Troubleshoot port shortages, multiple network interface card issues, and firewall configuration issues

Module 7 - Device Troubleshooting

  • Identify common device error status codes
  • Troubleshoot tape drive failures
  • Identify common device configuration issues
  • Troubleshooting SSO errors

Module 8 - Miscellaneous Troubleshooting

  • Troubleshoot general catalog backup problems
  • Perform manual database cleaning
  • Troubleshoot images database problems
